the difference among in spite of , despite and although, and Can we use "but" with despite?
Hello everyone and welcome back to Englishrevisit.
Today I am going to explain the difference among in spite of , despite and although, and Can we use "but" with despite?.
Basically this lesson is just a really jam pack(jam pack means really really full) the vocabulary, new words, more explanation for in spite ,despite and although.
Let's look at these example:
❌ Despite the train was empty, he came and sat in front of me.
✅ Although the train was empty, he came and sat in front of me.
WE CAN ALSO SAY: Despite the train being empty, he came and sat in front of me.(AND THIS IS CORRECT)
The explanation is:
Despite and in spite of are prepositions (NOT conjunctions).
Unlike although (a conjunction),
they cannot introduce a clause that has a finite verb ("was").
Let's compare:
In spite of/Despite owning two cars, he can't drive.
With although:
Although he owns two cars, he can't drive.
despite sth noun or -ing verb (WITHOUT of ).
For example:
Despite the heat, she wouldn't take her coat off.
in spite of sth noun or -ing verb (WITH of ).
For example:
In spite of the heat, she wouldn't take her coat off.
despite the fact (that).
For example:
She went to Sana'a despite the fact that her doctor had told her to rest.
There is no distinction between the two(despite and in spite of).
A common construction is seen here:
✅But despite the fall in Yemeni Rial, Abdul Rabu Mansour officials were at pains to play down any suggestion of crisis.
Because despite and in spite of indicate a change of emphasis, but is generally superfluous with either. It is enough to say:
✅Despite the fall in Yemeni Rial, Abdul Rabu Mansour officials ....etc
Right!
That is it for today's lesson!
I really hope you enjoyed , I really enjoyed making.
I wanna see you for another lesson.
